Oxford and Coventry are set to become the first UK cities to run their bus fleets entirely on electric energy through a Department for Transport competition to improve air quality and reduce emissions across England.
As part of the competition, the Government has received 19 bids from areas across England. Those who make successful bids could be awarded up to £50m to purchase all-electric buses and install new infrastructure.
Speaking on the announcement, West Midlands Mayor Andy Street stated: “Turning all Coventry’s bus fleet electrical isn’t simply a significant boost to public transportation in town, but it is going to also help handle the climate crisis we confront both here in the West Midlands and the broader UK.”
The 50 million strategies will be supported with an additional #75 million worth of investment in local bus operators to the brand new electrical buses.
In general, 19 areas applied for the contest, with applicants needed to demonstrate acquisition from stakeholders within their regional regions; outline present strategies to decrease greenhouse gases and enhance air quality, and also reveal how their plans will handle an present air quality issue.
